RUMS Badminton

RUMS Badminton Club is very established within the medical school, with over 150 members. We welcome all abilities, whether you’re always found with racquet in hand or are new to the shuttlecock – we want you!

BUCS Champions!

At the heart of the club are the many social events we have throughout the year; from the Freshers’ Meal to Social Tour and a visit to the All England Championships. We take pride in the inclusive nature of our club and if you can’t always make practice, a weekly Sportsnight is always there for you!

This past season has been a successful one for the club as we have seen our women’s team, led by Karen Erskine, making it to the South Eastern BUCS Final and returning with the cup after a tight match with Queen Mary University. After this year’s success, we are hopeful that the men’s and women’s teams captained by Tom Ngan and Sowmya Garikipati will be just as successful with a new intake of talented badminton players. Our training sessions are also available at a variety of ability levels: team training, development squad for those members who may be working to get into the team, and also a more relaxed social practice.

RUMS Badminton Club takes pride in offering a whole host of opportunities outside of the sport itself. ‘BADedu’ is a tutorial initiative run by members for members, for students in both pre-clinical and clinical phases. Former alumni members of the club, who are now practising doctors, host OSCE practice. Under our Publicity Officer Orla Gillman, we plan to expand BADucation to include more tutorials and IBSc sessions as well.

As part of our new club charity initiative starting this year, we will be looking to harvest all the talent and enthusiasm our large club has to offer and do more for our wider community. Events will range from themed Sportsnights to tournaments and beyond! Leading these events will be our friendly Social Secretaries, Becky Lai and Javeson Sabale, who will become familiar faces to all our new members.

Why should you join us? There’s a reason that we had over 150 members last year and that even our alumni still get involved. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and friendly club. It doesn’t matter whether you are a spring chicken fresher or a seasoned 6th year, born with a racket in your hand or a complete novice, you’re more than welcome at RUMS Badminton.

Joining a RUMS club enables you to make friends in all year groups and become familiar with what lies ahead, whilst also providing support and advice to younger members.
